Sugar Coated Cardboard

Researchers from the Cooperative Research Centre for Sugar Industry Innovation from Biotechnology in Brisbane, Australia have designed an easily recyclable replacement for paper products' wax coatings. Currently, many cardboard boxes aren't recyclable because of their petroleum veneer. Anna Sellah reports for ABC Science Online the CRC scientists developed a process to capture the essence of sugar cane's rigidity - called lignin - to make a light brown spray-on coating functionaly similar to wax, but biodegradable, recyclable, and not petroleum derived.
